Fox Film Scrapbook Prepared for the Production of the "Little Colonel" Movie Starring Shirley Temple
When Fox Studio negotiated for rights to Annie Fellows Johnston's 1895 novel, "The Little Colonel," they requested photographs of the real people and real places that inspired the story. According to the cover letter, the scrapbook contained, "... Photographs ... not obtained by a cameraman but by climbing attic stairs and having reproductions made of dusty treasured bundles." Many are obviously the work of turn-of-the-20th-century photographer Kate Matthews.
While most of the locations and people in the scrapbook were the real deal, the shot that supposedly shows The Locust is obviously a different home. The garden shot also looks suspiciously like Mary Johnston's garden at The Beeches or May Dulaney's garden at Tuliphurst.
"The Little Colonel" starring Shirley Temple was released by Fox Studio in 1935.
Thanks to the Oldham County Historical Society in LaGrange for allowing us to reproduce the scrapbook.
