A Place Called Pewee Valley, Published in 1970 by the Pewee Valley Centennial Commission, To Commemorate the City's 100th Year
In 1969, Lee Heiman (1916-2010) chaired the Pewee Valley Centennial Commission, which planned the city-wide celebration of our 100th year. The commission wrote past residents and their descendants, asking for pictures, oral histories and other memorabilia; researched landmarks; planned special events; produced a video; and published "A Place Called Pewee Valley."
Others who worked with him on "A Place Called Pewee Valley" included his wife, Elsie; professional photographer Richard Duncan (who also took photos for the Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church's centennial publication in 1967 and produced a display of Kate Matthews photos for Charter Weekend); Pam Parrish (who lived in the old Kentucky Confederate Home laundry); and Don Anderson of the University of Louisville Photographic Collection. Photos, unless otherwise credited, were taken by Heiman and Duncan.
The booklet went on sale for the first time at the Woman's Club's "country store souvenir counter" during the Centennial Celebration's Little Colonel Festival, September 25-27, 1970. The price: just 75 cents a copy.
