Ca. 1939 WPA Pewee Valley Plat Map
This undated plat map of Pewee Valley and surrounding properties was produced by the W.P.A. (Project 665-43-3-44) and is available in the Deeds and Records Room at the Oldham County Court House. Included with the map is a list showing the property owner's name and acreage for each numbered tract.
Though the map is undated, the year it was created can be narrowed down by what we know about some properties. For example, tract 2518, which is the property associated with The Locust, was still owned by Powhatan Wooldridge when this map was produced. He died September 14, 1940. Tracts 2507 and 2603, once associated with the Kentucky Confederate Home, were owned by the Rural Education Cooperative, which purchased the property from the Commonwealth of Kentucky in late 1938. Thus, the survey and map were likely completed in 1939.
Note that some Pewee Valley's street names have changed over the years. Confederate Avenue is now Muirs Lane. Johnston Avenue has been broken into a combination of Peace Lane and Central Avenue. Huston Lane is now Houston, Cemetery Avenue is now part of Maple Avenue, and Pewee Valley Road is now part of Central Avenue. Prim Rose Avenue, which once ran between Maple Avenue and Beechdale in Crestwood, has vanished. At one time, Prim Rose connected to the back side of Locust Lane and the quarry.
Also shown on this map are the two African-American settlements just outside the city limits: Fraziertown and Stumptown. The property owners lists accompanying the map also show whether the owner was Caucasian or African-American, providing researchers with an accurate look at Pewee Valley's African-American communities during the late 1930s.
Special thanks to Oldham County Clerk Julie K. Barr for providing scans and hard copies of the map and accompanying tract information to the Pewee Valley Historical Society and to Albert Harrison, LLC, land surveyor, for helping the historical society locate the plat book.
